New Media Mill was founded as a 501c3 non-profit in 1999 to introduce sophisticated Internet tools to non-profits. In February 2003, New Media Mill was reorganized as a limited liability corporation so that it could also serve labor union, association and government sectors. Yet New Media Mill remains true to its non-profit origins; every year it contributes tens of thousands of dollars to small and medium-sized, progressive non-profit organizations. In 2004, for example, New Media Mill gave away $35,715 in services such as web site construction, streaming media and digital video production. Since its inception, the staff of New Media Mill has been dedicated to the dissemination of open source tools for nonprofits. These tools are fashioned by communities of developers who share their code freely in what has become a significant challenge to the proprietary software giants of the 1990s. The building blocks of our work are Linux, Unix, MYSQL and PHP. Elements of our content management system, for example, come from networks of developers as far away as Vietnam and Morocco. The entire content management system is open source code and is not "owned" by New Media Mill or anyone else. Any developer is free to re-purpose or alter this code. Our exclusive reliance on these standards-based, open source formats ensures that our clients will never be locked into a dead-end, proprietary solution. Indeed, a portion of our business has been helping organizations extract themselves from proprietary relationships they have outgrown, or can no longer afford.
